About this work
A single ballerina stands centered in a classical pose, weight on one pointed foot with the other leg extended behind her, one hand resting on her hip and the other behind her back. Her head is tilted upward and to the side, a small flower tucked into her hair bun, while her tiered tutu of pink, cream and gold catches the light around her.
A cool teal-and-violet ground sets off the warm red of the bodice and the honeyed floor beneath her feet. The tutu's ruffles are built with thick, confident strokes that catch soft directional light, and the loose, painterly handling of the background gives the figure a buoyant, theatrical presence.
